October brings rain on the window, damp air and evenings that get cold early. This is the season for blankets, hot tea and a jar on the bedside table that smells of eucalyptus and pine.
Below is the AURODHEA Balsamic Ointment, MD05B, read from its data sheet. It holds details you won’t find on the lid: two ways to use it, and two different age limits.
What’s inside
The base is petrolatum and coconut oil, a dense balm that stays on the skin. The scent and the cooling feeling come from:
- eucalyptus essential oil, the main note you smell when you open the jar;
- Scots pine and rosemary essential oils, a forest, resinous edge;
- menthol, the cool feeling on the skin;
- camphor and tea tree oil, sharp and fresh.
The fragrance also contains limonene and linalool, two substances the EU labels as allergens.
What the maker says, and what it is
Chogan describes it as a balm for cold-season symptoms: a blocked nose, a cough, a sore throat. They say it makes breathing easier and helps you sleep better, with an effect lasting up to 12 hours. Those are the maker’s words, not mine. The product is registered as a cosmetic (CPNP 3202690), not a medicine. If you are actually ill, see a doctor, not a jar.
Two ways to use it
On the skin. Rub it into the chest, neck and back for 3–5 minutes, then leave a thick layer on the chest.
As a steam inhalation. Dissolve 1 teaspoon in half a litre of hot water and breathe the steam for about 10 minutes.
The data sheet says twice a day, once in the evening before bed. That evening use is the ritual in our video: the balm, the lamp off, sleep.
Who it isn’t for
This is the most important part of the data sheet, and none of it is on the lid:
- on the skin, not for children under 3;
- as an inhalation, not for children under 6;
- not during pregnancy or breastfeeding;
- not if you are sensitive to menthol or have contact dermatitis.
Before the first use, the maker recommends a patch test: a little balm on the inside of the elbow. If there is no irritation or redness after 24 hours, you can use it.
Also worth knowing
- After opening it keeps for 6 months.
- If it gets into the eyes, rinse with water straight away.
- Store it in a cool, dry place, away from heat.
- Dermatologically tested.
