October evenings get cold and damp, and this is the jar for the bedside table. Open it and the room smells of eucalyptus and pine.

Inside: eucalyptus, Scots pine and rosemary essential oils, menthol, camphor and tea tree oil on a petrolatum and coconut oil base. The maker describes it as a balm for cold-season symptoms — a blocked nose, a cough, a sore throat — that makes breathing easier and helps you sleep better. Those are Chogan’s words. By its documents it is a cosmetic product (CPNP 3202690), not a medicine.

Two details from the data sheet that are easy to miss. It works two ways: rubbed into the chest, neck and back, or dissolved in hot water as a steam inhalation. And the age limits differ: on the skin it is not for children under 3, as an inhalation — not under 6. It is also not for pregnancy or breastfeeding, and a 24-hour patch test on the inside of the elbow is recommended before the first use.
