Nothing here differs from the large jar except how much of it you get. The reason to start small is the smell: rosemary and thyme are assertive, herbal, nothing like a perfumed body cream, and people divide cleanly into those who find it wonderful and those who find it too much. Better to find out with 50 ml.

Take a little, work it into the knee or the shoulder for about five minutes, then cover the spot with cotton or wool and let it stay warm. That last step is in the manufacturer’s instructions, and it is the part that makes this a ritual rather than a quick rub.

If you already know it suits you, the 150 ml jar is the one to keep — per millilitre it goes considerably further.

Contains beeswax, so not vegan. Firmer in winter, softer in summer — that’s the oils, not a fault. Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or on children under 5, and worth a patch test on the inner elbow first.

How to use it

Worth knowing before you buy
